Tea Set c. 1760-1770
Gift of John Buck
WDS Collection 1971.24
Belonged to Elizabeth Saltonstall Deane. Descended to donor through Hannah Deane Buck, Silas Deane’s sister
Chinese export porcelain tea sets such as this one were a common sight in wealthy households across the British Atlantic World of the 18th century. This particular set was owned by Elizabeth Saltonstall Deane, Silas Deane’s second wife, and stepmother of Jesse Deane. This set, decorated with a pattern known as “famille rose,” would have originally included a slop bowl (for collecting the dregs) and a number of cups and saucers in addition to the teapot, sugarbowl, and spoon tray which survive.
