This stunning Lady’s Work Table (circa 1795), built from birds-eye maple and mahogany, was gifted to the Museum by Mrs. Ludlow S. Bull in 1974. Ladies’ Work Tables were designed to accommodate sewing and needlework and were common furnishings in the parlor, library or living room of a 19th-century home. Both decorative and lightweight, the Work Table featured a compartmentalized drawer to hold thread and other sewing notions, as well as a hanging workbag to hold fabric, yarn, clothing or linens which needed mending, or even decorative embroidery or knitting projects.
